New layout ideas

Some new ideas on the ground floor layout and internal stair treatment.
We probably are pretty fixed in our ways  with the kitchen master bed container and have completed too much to incorporate the new laundry location.

What do you do when they are going to build a freeway through your loungeroom?

Well it takes a bit of thinking but we eventually decided we should up and move – lock stock and container.

Vicroads offered us 4 options to consider and all had some impact on our container site.  They compromised and came up with  a fifth proposal that took the worst aspect of all 4 and combined them in a fifth proposal.

So we have decided to move to a new location – a much smaller residential block that doesnt have planning complications.  We have engaged a new Architect to assist us with building plans and approvals and we should have the lot on the move during October.

We are looking at growing the build by one extra 40ft container above our western container.  Its quite exciting and we will be posting new plans shortly

Portable tankstand

Playing with pallets has led to our next mini project for our garden – a portable tankstand and tank.

We need water at a number of locations where we want things to grow and we dont really want to reticulate  water all over the place.  So our idea is to set up 1000 lt IBU’s (from a food source).

Now on the ground they dont give you much pressure nut sitting on a stack of 5 similar sized pallets you have a nice, portable (if you have a forklift if full) tank stand ready for your summer garden watering, chickens or livestock water needs.

But they are so ugly.  So what we plan to try is to build the IBU on top pf pallets into a vertical garden by constructing 4 sides with vertical garden supports constructed from pallet material

Watch this space over the next month and we will see if we can turn this ugly duckling into a thing of practical beauty.

Pallet Garden Update

We’ve had a reasonable success with our first highrise pallet garden

Some snail attack on the left hand side but we are now adding some snail pallets to our pallets

Joanne has also been adding to our plantings – usually when I’m too grumpy to work with on the containers

Pallet Gardening

Recycling is something that comes naturally when you are building a container home

We are looking to build some raised vegetable beds as well as adding some colour.  Our soil, in the outer north west of Melbourne surburbia is totally devoid of vegetable material and struggles to grow thistle.

So we have been inventing raised garden beds using some left over pallets  Were looking to use the square foot gardening approach to our new beds.

Examples we found on the web include these from Brisbane

These are very neat and clean – our pallets arnt that good

Our approach was to wrap the pallets with weedmesh rather than creating the bags of soil as shown in the above photos.

We laid down two small pallets with solid ply tops then two larger and then two smaller pallets.  Each of the top two pallet sets were wrapped together and filled with soil.  We also added a weeping soaker hose to the pallets so we could irrigate the pallets.

Behind the pallets (to the south) we are building our compost heap – once we get three pallet stacks we will have a three bay compost heap

We plan to punch holes into the front faces of the pallets and grow herbs

It just takes a hell of a lot of soil (which we have had to seive to get rid of rocks) to fill these

We’ll post more after we have planted.
